Can sentimental value get in the way of a new design? If it paralyzes you, absolutely! But, if you are willing to spend a little time being creative and having fun with colors and texture, your old furniture could blend right in with a new design.
A few momentos can make your house a home, but what about a big blue chair?
A dear friend of mine lost her battle to MS a year ago. During her illness her home had become a hospital to accommodate her care needs. After she passed I volunteered to help her husband create a new space and reclaim the home. As we walked through the spaces, the first thing my client said to me was that the "Big Blue Chair" must stay. This chair helped him sooth 5 children over the years and held overwhelming sentimental value. As a designer of course I had to cringe, this was no small knick-knack to be hidden or strategically placed!
Every design needs to consider the function of the room. The "Big Blue Chair" did not belong in the breakfast nook, and the office did not belong in the entire house. We slowly reclaimed spaces, and found the perfect place for "Big Blue". A new rug with blues, greys and browns tied in the old chair with the new couch and coffee tables. Reclaiming the house has brought joy back into the home and has helped a healing recovery begin.
